Ask Movie Slate - Halloween 2016 - The Blair Witch Project

Commissioned by :iconssjcharon:

This one might have been the simplest yet the heaviest of all the pictures I've done for this year's Halloween event. I say this because it's nothing but a forest, with trees, a foggy and distant horizon, nothing too special from the get go, right? Well this much simplicity actually made for a pretty big file, and maybe it's because of the brushes I used, or the DPI was too high, but man. Sometimes trying to make something simple turns out to be ridiculously complicated. Also I don't have anything against the Equestria Girls brand, either the toys or the movies. I just thought it might be funny that the (now iconic) Blair Witch stick figures were substituted by actual EqG dolls. Maybe it's not a Witch, but Hasbro, who's stalking Movie Slate in these woods.

"The Blair Witch Project" is one of the most divisive movies in the history of cinema. Just let me say right away that I admire this movie for what it did to the foundations of the Box Office, by making almost $250 million out of a budget of $60k. That's insane. That made it into the most profitable movie of all time, so whether you like it or not, one can't deny the evidence when people call this a huge success. Look at me dancing around the question. Anyways, do I like this movie? Yes. Do I think it deserve all the praise? I think it does, yeah. This movie is so subtle and it has such a slow boil that by the time you notice you're in boiling-hot water it's already too late. People don't like the characters, but I have no problem putting myself in their place and see things from their perspective. I'd too would react like this if I were them. It has a total of zero jump scares, which is kind of insane when even some great modern horror movies have at least two or three, and this amount of calm only adds to the tension and the fear factor. It's like stretching a piano wire to its limit but still not letting it snap. It kept me in tension the whole time. This is a movie that knows that less is more and lets you fill in the gaps with your imagination, which for some of us who see and hear things everywhere makes the experience as excruciating as it is immersive.

While not a flawless movie, The Blair Witch Project has managed to remain relevant, (somewhat) timeless and still scary almost 20 years after it's release. I can see very easily why someone would find it boring, but for me this is the kind of movie that happens once every generation. I rate it: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments. I appreciate and every single one I receive.

And the sequel... causes terror for veeeeeery different reasons.

OH MY GOD! What a place so frightening, it gives me shivers only to think of the horrible soul that inhabits it with that decoration.

The one that came out this year?

It was alright. Too much shouting, too many seeing the creatures. The last third of the movie was fucking great, but then again when compared to the rest it's just alright. The bubble of Found Footage movies has already burst. We need a few years before getting another one of these.

Well, if I saw those dolls hanging I'd say they would freak me out more than seeing any stick figures *rimshot.*

Speaking of which, there is one movie I recommend you watch called "Knocking on Heavens Door", and no this isn't the Cowboy Bebop movie I'm talking about. It's basically this German movie about two guys who find out they don't have long left to live, so they go on this roadtrip to see the sunset for one final time on the beach while being chased by mobsters and cops.

Lovely, if what you can find a English subbed version on youtube. Since this movie was straight to TV/VHS movie, I don't think it ever went on DVD's or was dubbed in English.

That's a rather fascinating interpretation, actually. Why would the guys want to kill the girl, though?

Fun fact about this movie, the actors were given almost no direction on this movie, they were simply sent out into the woods where they would occasionally find simple directions written on paper telling them to go one way or another. All their reactions and the building tension was the actors literally losing it out there and freaking out.

Yeah I remember reading that the directing in this movie was borderline abusive, which is a weird way to motivate your actors. I wonder if they ever feared them walking out on them and leaving the production.
