Ask Movie Slate - Episode 167

I guess it's quite obvious that I was heavily influenced by Salvador Dali with this piece. He's one of my favorite painters, I love his sense of structure and blocking, and I think people tend to ignore his influence in the way that modern art works. He was doing deconstructions and reconstructions of emotions on canvas before any of us was even alive. He was unique, and there will never be anyone like him. Even if we find an artist that is just as good as he was, it won't matter because we will say "He's just like Salvador Dali". Setting a precedent is really important, my friends.

I did watch "Paprika" a couple of times a few years ago. I remember watching it even before "Inception" was released and basically pulled a "Matrix" like how the Wachowski's did with "Ghost in the Shell". It's a really inventive, weird, wild, unstructured and surprisingly likable movie. Watching feels like the world has no barriers and everything is possible, and they use animation to exploit this to the Nth degree. I'd consider this Satoshi Kon's best movie, if anything because it feels like a more harrowing version of Disney's "Fantasia". No musical structure or cameos from Mickey Mouse, but it feels like watching an art museum in motion. It's pure madness made film and I recommend everyone who loves movies and art to give it a watch.

This has to be one of the most satisfying pictures I've done involving Movie Slate. "Paprika" has been one of those movies I've been suggested since the day I opened the blog, but I never considered my skills to be on par with what that movie has to offer, so I never thought I could be good enough to make it justice. It wasn't until I was getting ready to go to BronyScot that I came across a YouTube playlist with all the music from the movie, so after listening to all of it a flashing image crossed my head of Movie Slate's face disappearing and turning into stars. I quickly drafted that in a small piece of paper, and a few days later put it onto Photoshop. Sadly I had to leave for BronyScot so I left the sketch unfinished, and I was so unsure about it that while on the plane I sketched it again, this time putting more detail into it. I think I'm fairly satisfied with the end result because I obsessed so much over making it as close to my vision as I could. I've never been this wild with one of my Movie Slate updates, and this is why I like to consider that blog as the testing ground for new techniques and ideas. Also, that little Movie Slate? That's Movie Slate's alter ego in the dream world, and her name would be Kubricka. I had fun with this one, can you tell?

Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments. I appreciate and every single one I receive.

Thank you!
